The Brief

CANNA wanted to build excitement and anticipation across their social media channels in the lead up to their presence at the 2018 Boardmasters Surf & Music festival down in Cornwall. Taking inspiration from the film released by Boardmasters prior to 2017’s festival, which revealed the names of the headline acts sculpted into the sand at Watergate Bay where the festival is held, CANNA wanted to replicate this idea to announce their partnership with Boardmasters. The key difference would be in breaking the film down into a series of shorter social media stings  to increase their engagement with their social media followers and improve their brand awareness amongst festival-goers.

The Challenge

Logistically we were faced with the issue of running drone and ground camera filming simultaneously whilst the sand artist set about carving the CANNA logo and their signature gorilla into the sand. We needed both perspectives in order to create the level of intrigue around the finished piece, ensuring to capture enough footage that would allow for the creation of numerous short stings without prematurely revealing the finished piece.

The Solution

After a detailed discussion with the sand artist on location, we were able to put a flight plan in place that would give us the best aerial coverage of the different stages of the sculpting, whilst not compromising or exposing the ground camera operative who would be capturing those all-important close ups of the intricacy of the process. These shots allowed us to keep the finished piece revealed right up until the very last moment, where a spiralling drone shot made for a fantastic dramatic reveal.
